Office 2010 file associations in Windows 7
Looking around all the forums there appears to be many problems with missing office/word icons using Windows 7. I have uninstalled & reinstalled Office 2010 several times. Re built the icon cache, renamed database to old, etc. etc. etc. I certainly am not looking forward to a clean install of Ultimate! The attachment shows icons appearing on the file associations under Default Programs. Also C:/Windows/Installer does not appear in listing nor with search???
Just a few questions.
Where exactly are you expecting to see these icons and not seeing them?
Did you upgrade from Office 2007 to Office 2010?
Are the icons for the application themselves appearing in your start menu? Ie start - office - individual office Programs?
Have you tried right clicking on the file (from your attached photo) and going to open with and then choose word ( always open selected) and them see of the problem is corrected.
Word 2010 Professional
I am expecting to see the "Word" icon on saved .doc Documents. I expect to see the "DOCX" icon on saved .docx Documents. NO, I did not upgrade, I previously used office 2003, uninstalled it and installed 2010. The association is correct in (Default Programs/Associate a file type or protocol with a program). However the icons are corrupt and not showing up. See below. This is how my icons appear in all saved documents I create. As you can see, the two in question, they are associated with Microsoft Word but fail to produce the correct icon on any saved documents
One last question. When you double click on a .doc od .docx file that has been previosuly saved does it open without prompting you to select a program to open it with?

Have you tried repair? Two methods that I read that have helped.
Go to start Programs - Microsoft office - Microsoft office tools - Microsoft office picture manager - Help - detect and repair - Check restore my shortcuts while repairing.
Go to start Programs - Microsoft office - Microsoft office tools - Microsoft office diagnostics. On the cast check all of the icons should get restored.

There is NO Option in Microsoft Office Tools called - Microsoft office diagnostics. I use Windows 7 Ultimate.
i also recommend a reinstall, or just do this:
right click: properties > shortcut > change icon
icons are located in:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office
Unable to locate an Icon File or Folder under C:\ProgramFiles\Microsoft Office.
Are you running a 32 bit or 64 bit machine?
32-Bit Operating System, Windows 7 Ultimate, Office 2010 Home & Student, Eset Nod32 antivirus, Outpost Pro Firewall, also behind a D-Link Router........but what's your point? I used the same installer on my laptop which has identical programs and Office 2010 works perfectly??????
I noticed on two different machaines 32 bit and 64 bit that the icons were installed in different folders so i thought i'd double check.
My icons are located here C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office14 and not in the program files x86 folder.
Are they there?
If by "are they there" you are referring to the individual Application Icons, ie: Winword icon, Excel icon etc, yes they are there and appear as they should. There is not a folder called Icons. Refer to my second post with the snapshot of the Default programs file associations. They are incorrect there and are incorrect on any saved document of the .doc and .docx variety.
Uninstalled for the 3rd time using Mr. Fixit Uninstaller. Used cCleaner to cleanup registry files, used Microsoft Installer cleanup tool. Re installed and re activated. Joy the icons have returned..............for now!
That is great news....i know how annoying something like that can be. I've posted a note to Microsoft and we'll see if they come up with a KB article for future reference.

I am trying to set up a new computer and the file associations are not correct. If I double click on a .doc, Word does not open. I get an error message saying the file association does not exist.
Windows 7 64bit
brand new Asus computer
Click.Start/All Programs/Default Programs/Associate a file type or protocol with a program/........wait for it to load/Scroll down to .doc if it is there, Double click it and see if Windows Word is listed. If it is click it and save!...........Let us know how you make out??
Running Win 7 and Office 2010. xls files are associated with MS Office and there is no listing of Excel when I browse for another file. How do I fix or how do I "repair" the Office install?
Could you give us a little more detail to exactly what happens. I don't fully understand. Also, if you don't mind, could you post this as a new thread in general office discussion as it seems to be a big issue across the board.
I can't save my presentation as a Web file. This option is no longer in save-as power point 2010. I tried to configure in file-options-default save, but this option (save as web presentation) is not on this list.
What can I do to save as "web page" or html in pp2010?
I also tried to open in Publisher but can't open this ".pptx" file

Installed Home/Student Office 2010 on Vista; however Word or Excel files cannot be opened from outside their respective applications. They will, however, open from within the application. I tried right clicking on document to Open With the particular application but the applications are not even listed. When opening a document, I get the message 'file does not have a program associated, etc." so I went to Programs/Default Programs/Set Association to change the program associated with particular extensions, but none of the Office 2010 applications show up. What is wrong?
Well, I have Office 2010 loaded (after removal of 2007), Microsoft Outlook and I have only listed in 'Set Default Programs' list. But then the 2007 Office system, which is the same thing. Word, Excel, etc. do not appear in the 'Default Programs' list. I think that part works as expected. However, it does not explain why the Word, Excel, etc., are not in association with the correct file types for connecting to install.
I was having problems with xlsx file tpye. Was not showing up in the default programs. The xlsx file type had the default program as a PDF. I tried everything to get excel in the default programs. It worked fine when logged in as a different user. Windows7 does not tell you that you have to be an administrator to update the default programs..you just go through each step like it is working but nothing happens.
I finnaly realized that to change the default program your userid has to be either an administrator or you have to "RUN AS Administrator". I was able to set the correct default program for xlsx to excel.
you can also find the file that you're having an issue with it and right click on and choose open with. Then browse to the office.exe file like excel.exe or word.exe and choose "always open".

I am having a similar problem to the first post with the file icons. My problem is with .docx files. They have the same icon as first posted above.
Can someone help me to get it back to normal? I am using 32 bit and it is on Win7.

click strart,go to microsoft office, right click on the blank icon,click properties, go to security, click continue,click on your computer name click ok,go back to security click continue this time on owners right allow full controll and you get your icon back. Do the same for each program on the microsoft office.Easy. Good luck
All my .xlsx files are being associated with MS Outlook, and when I shift-rightclick and go to "open with" it doesn;t allow me the option to make Excel the default program for that extension.
I also went to Start-Default Programs-Set Associations and it won't allow me to change the setting to Excel from Outlook.
I'm running Windows 7, 32-bit and Office 2010. I've been running this system for at least a year now and the problem began just a short while ago.
