Problem opening PDF files in Word

I cannot open a PDF file in Word. When I click on the PDF file to open it, it opens the file convertor, and it shows Windows (Default) is selected and Western European (Windows) is highlighted in blue. Below in the preview pane it shows jumbled letters.

If I go back and right click the PDF file and select Properties it shows it is correctly set up and indicates that it will correctly open with Adobe Reader 9.4, but as I have explained above it will not do this. I think I caused this problem by trying to associate a PDF file with something other than Adobe Reader as this programme would not let me save a scanned document in a horizontal view rather than perpendicular one, and I had experimented trying to associate it with Word with disastrous consequences!

However, if I open the document through my Document Library without using Word it then opens correctly.

I would much appreciate it if anyone could explain how to fix this most aggravating problem so that it will open from Word.

Thank you.

Hi,

I don't understand why you would use word to open a PDF document? That won't work. Are you trying to open a PDF document in word so yo can edit the document? Please elaborate and I'll do my best to assist.

I suspect you are correct and that I got worked up over nothing. When I scan a document it goes into a common directory as a PDF. I thought in the past I could open it in Word when All Files was selected. On reflection I am not so sure. This all started when I scanned a birth certificate and when it opened using Adobe Reader the image was perpendicular. A button on the tool bar enabled me to rotate to the horizontal but would not let me Save. I had the idea that I used to be able to save similar documents in the horizontal in the past.

Thank you for your help.

Hi,

On the document icon itself, right click, go to properties. Under the "General" tab, go to "Opens with", click on the change button, choose the Adobe program (assuming you have it), click ok, apply, ok.
