Hi everyone, thanks in advance for any advice you can offer.

Just wondering when inserting a footer, is there any way to get rid of the horizontal line that seems to insist on including itself?

Many thanks,
Liz

Hi, Liz,

Sounds as though you're referring to the footnote separator. If so, this should work (in Word '07 or '10):

1. From the View tab, or by clicking the view button to the right of the Status bar at the bottom, change to Draft view.
2. On the References tab, click the "Show Notes" button -- a separate window will open at the bottom of the screen.
3. Click the drop-arrow for the Footnotes menu and select "Footnote Separator."
4. Highlight the line and press your Delete key; then click the "X" button at the right top of the Footnotes window frame.

When you go back to Print Layout view, you'll see your numbered footnotes without the separator line.

Hi Rick, thanks very much for your reply. However it turned out that I was actually having a border issue. The solution, in case it helps anyone else, was to select the items in the footer then, from the home tab on the ribbon, select the drop-down on the border button then "no border".

Best,
Liz
