Word 2010 - Close A Document Using X
Hi,
When I have only one document open, there is no longer a small x in the top right corner to close the file. There is only a large X which closes the entire program.
Is the only way to close the active document (when you only have one open) to use File > Close?
We used to have a small x for closing the active file.
Thanks in advance.
What Operating System are you using?
Word unlike excel closes that document but if you have multiple documents open it will only close that one specific word document and not the entire problem. Excel works a bit differently with having multiple windows. I don't recall Word 2007 being different?
Having seperate windows for Word allows for side by side windows viewing etc. In addition, Windows 7 ,helps tremendously within managing this as well.
Let me know if i answered this properly or perhaps i don't fully understand the issue. Screen shots always help.
When I only have a single document open in Word, there is only a large X in the top-right corner. I cannot use this to close the document, as it will close the entire program.
My only option is to use File > Close.
So, my question : is there any other way to close a single document in Word, aside from using File > Close?
Thank you.
Now I understand. Let me know if this works for you.
Base on my research, we cannot add a specific close button for single document, however, we can work around the issue by add the File > close to Quick access toolbar. This would give you virtually the same process but a different button.
Please use following steps:
1.Click the Quick access toolbar options and click More Commands…

2. choose commands from All Commands, find the close/close all with the specific icon on the below screenshot, add it and click OK.
3. We can use the button in the Quick access toolbar now:

Thank you for using Microsoft Office 2010 Forums.
Thank you for your reply.
That would be a good alternative.
It just didn't make sense to me that Microsoft removed this functionality that used to be there.
I agree with the last comment - why on earth didn't Microsoft leave this in as they have with Excel. More keystrokes means wasted time...and it's absolutely infuriating after twenty+ years.
I look forward to the Office 2010 update which puts it back in!
Cheers
I have the same question. Did you ever get a response?
