I tried to insert page numbers, but it just tries to take me to online sources of more page numbers at Office.com. Then that says "no content available".
How do I add page numbers?

Had to change the Trust Center center settings and File Block settings. Now the page number insert option works.

that's interesting. never heard of that. how did those settings get enabled to begin with that would disable adding / inserting page numbers into a word document. was this in word 2010?

I don't know. I had Office 2010 Beta loaded earlier, but uninstalled it before installing the regular Office 2010. Everything worked fine with the Beta.

I was having the same problem (Word 2010), and after hours of playing with different issues, this (for some reason) worked for me.
First.....i opened a the word document i wanted to add page numbers to and i went to file / options / trust center / trust center settings.....from there i selected "disable macros except digitally signed macros" AND i selected "trust access to VBA project object model".

I believe the setting i describe above will remain in effect for every document from here on, so i shouldn't have to do that part again.

Second....(and i still have to do this step for any document i want to add page numbers too, but at least it works)...i go to the home ribbon, or the view ribbon, or whichever ribbon has the Macros button. Select macros. Inside there you will see a drop down box.....select "word commands" from the list. From the large menu above select "insertpagenumbers" and click "run". Follow the prompts from there and voila!!

By the way........i have no idea if the first sequence of steps i listed are actually necessary. But i included them because i did that first and never bothered to go change them back to see if the other sequence of steps works regardless.
